Visit of Chief of Clan Matheson
Sir Alexander Matheson, Chief of Clan Matheson, and his wife Katharine (Lady Matheson) will be visiting New Zealand in January/February next year. This is a private visit but they will be taking part in three Clan Matheson events.
You’re welcome at any of these, and we encourage you to mark the date of any in your area and make plans to take part in our informal events.
Dunedin, Wednesday 29 January 2025 at the Mosgiel RSA Spitfire restaurant, 6 Church Street, Mosgiel from 5:30 pm.
Get together for an informal dinner (on your own account), which be ordered from the dinner menu, the daily specials blackboard or the bar snacks menu. The venue is child-friendly, and a children’s menu is available.
It would help with planning if you let Wayne Matheson know you’re attending, by 20 January if possible: 027 224 7447 or waynejmatheson@gmail.com.
Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo, Saturday 8 February. Clan Matheson will be the featured clan for this event and our Chief, Sir Alexander Matheson, guest of honour.
You’re invited too. Be there by 10:00 am and march with the clan as our chief leads Mathesons, and all the clans, into the main arena for the opening ceremony. Stay a while to watch pipe band competitions, Highland dancing, caber tossing and hammer throwing. Get into steam punk with a tartan theme, join the street parade or watch the spectacular evening tattoo.
Visit the clan village to meet up with other Mathesons, head back to the 1970s with Hogsnort Bulldogs Goodtime Band or feed the inner person at the food trucks. Check out the day’s programme here and find out more about the day here.
Waipu, Sunday 9 February. There will be an informal gathering in the Heritage School immediately behind the Waipu Scottish Migration Museum (vehicle access off Halifax Drive). This will be a great opportunity to mix with others with an interest in Matheson heritage, meet Sir Alexander and Lady Matheson, and hear about Clan Matheson activities around the world.
Museum volunteers will be putting on afternoon tea, and donations to the Museum would be welcome. You’re welcome to visit the Museum before the gathering, and there will be an opportunity to continue meeting Mathesons over dinner (own arrangements; details to be announced on the day).
